" UNBROKEN CHAINS " is an attempt to explore one of the most complex social issues confronting the Tamil people of Jaffna - the dowry system. The dowry system as practiced in the Jaffna social formation is a deeply institutionalized, intractable customary practice. it has its own peculiarities and unique history: it is bound up with property relations and socio - cultural practices: it is a major source of the social oppression of women. we systematically explore various socio - cultural issues related to the practice and conclude with an exposition of possible ways and means of eradicating this mode of social oppression of women
